This project comprises a series of linked pavilions surrounding internal glazed courtyards. The extensive use of natural timber internally in walls and ceilings and externally in cladding and exposed structures gives the facility a residential, suburban character. This is enhanced by carefully landscaped courtyards and external garden areas.
Blackbutt timber external cladding and exposed columns were chosen for durability, texture and patterning. They lend a warmth and non-institutional feel to the buildings. The timber is durable, low maintenance, and has begun to age gracefully.
The judging panel found the attention to detail in this project exceptional. They particularly admired the elegant manner in which the buildings and surrounds complement their setting.
Winners were announced on 18 September at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. Many well-known individuals from government, the timber industry, and the design community were on hand to enjoy what has become the premier event in the Australian timber-design calendar.
Thank you to everyone who entered the Awards. This has been one of our biggest years to date, enjoying a great deal of public interest. The success of the 2014 Australian Timber Design Awards—Australasia's foremost timber design and architectural awards—is due to you.
