Viaggio Bar and Cafe is located airside at Sydney International Airport. Occupying an underutilised departure gate lounge area, the timber-lined cafe bar transforms the space into a refuge for departing travellers and is a deliberate counterpoint to the formality of the public concourse.
A fluid language of rich timber is used throughout. Select-grade, AFS certified Spotted Gum was chosen for both its visual qualities but also its fire-resistance properties - critical in the fire-engineered terminal.
Timber joinery - vertical boards finished to a fine stainless steel edge - encapsulates the bar and service counter addressing both the concourse and the cafe seating area.
The palette continues on to the floor plane and provides a visual link across the space to a screen of vertical timber fins and glimpses to the departure gate beyond. A two-component non-toxic waterborne polyurethane was used to finish the floors in a special Matt look called 'Invisible Protection' to minimise distracting shine and reflections
An expansive black acoustic ceiling forms the backdrop for a dynamic floating orange cloud light which hovers over the space providing a sense of drama and identity.
A sculptural timber joinery unit delineates a separate children's play area which is lined in folds of bright green carpet, whilst a long bench frames dramatic views of the airport landscape. All joinery is finished with a Cabot's Natural Decking Oil to enhance and protect the timber, including providing resistance to mould and mildew.
A casual mix of classic timber bar and table seating accommodates both individual business travellers and family groups.
The rich, fluid interior provides a warm retreat to the bright noisy activity of the airport environment.
