2014 Interior Fitout, Residential - Carterwilliamson - Spiegel Haus
2014 Interior Fitout, Residential - Carterwilliamson - Spiegel Haus
The Interior Fitout - Residential award recognises the best use of timber in a fitout of a new or existing (renovation) Residential Class 1 building.

The 2014 winner was Spiegel Haus by Carterwilliamson, a thoughtfully crafted home in Sydney’s Inner West that celebrates the warmth, robustness and diversity of timber. The home incorporates many timber elements, most notably a striking Grey Ironbark staircase. This staircase sits at the very heart of the house, connecting all three levels of the home and showcasing the inherent beauty of timber through fine detailing and construction.

The warm, earthy tones of the stair counterpoint the glossy black exterior tiles, mirror-lined void and polished concrete floors. This contrast is also evident in the kitchen, where a Blackened American Oak veneer gives a textural contrast to the smooth marble benchtop.

This home was designed for a family with two young children, so it was important that it be able to withstand the rigors of family life. As such, v-jointed pine lining boards replace traditional plasterboard cladding for the walls and ceilings. These not only look beautiful but are robust and durable.

Timber is wonderfully tactile and good to touch. It has been specified for many high-use elements in this project -- such as kitchen doors, sliding doors and windows and the stair balustrade.

Judges comments: The project details are aspiring, sophisticated and elegant, and the joinery work was beautifully done.

Finalists for 2014 in this category not including the winner were:
  • Camden Road Residence by Neil Architecture
  • Paddington House by PIDCOCK - Architecture + Sustainability
  • River House Extension by JOP Designs

NB: Shaun Carter, Principal of Carterwilliamson, will be a guest speaker at the Timber and Interior Seminar on 13 November 2014 (see below for details).

2014 Interior Fitout, Commercial - Those Architects with End of Work - Ansarada Office
2014 Interior Fitout, Commercial - Those Architects with End of Work - Ansarada Office
The Interior Fitout - Commercial award recognises the best use of timber in a fitout of a commercial space e.g. an office, shop, or foyer.

The winner for 2014 was Those Architects with End of Work for Ansarada Office. The design for Ansarada Office met the client's request for a sophisticated yet simple aesthetic that would represent their brand ethos. The design team had inherited a heritage building with significant historic value, so this was a difficult challenge to meet.

The existing material mix of raw brickwork, rustic timber columns, beams and flooring gives the space a very robust appeal that is responded to in a sophisticated manner using highly refined timber products in a contrasting colour palette. This results in a fitout that maintains an architectural dialogue between the new and the old and which clearly displays the sophisticated yet simple mantra of the client’s brand. The design celebrates the historical use of the timber structure by leaving it entirely exposed while demonstrating the highly sophisticated use of timber products in the new architectural elements.

The fitout is the global headquarters of tech company Ansarada. The project consists of workstations, quiet rooms, a boardroom, a video conference facility, a gym, a kitchen, a reception, meeting rooms and breakout areas.

The fitout primarily consists of maple-faced veneered plywood with a triple whitewash finish that juxtaposes the dark hardwoods of the existing building structure. The panels are perforated in a specially designed pattern in many places to enhance the acoustic performance of the open-plan space.

Judges' comments: The project features a clever use of materials to define space in a minimalist way. The spaces are defined, with the original and the new working well together. The office space exudes a sense of calm.

Finalists for 2014 in this category not including the winner were:
  • CBRE Melbourne Office by WMK Architecture
  • Manly Phoenix - Hotel Steyne by GroupGSA
  • St Mary's Church Thornbury by Paolo Pianezze Architect
