2013 Interior Residential - Fox Johnston - Balmain House
The major focus of the 2013 Australian Timber Design Awards has been Forte at Victoria Harbour, our overall winner. However, the winners of our interior awards also deserve special recognition.

Fox Johnston won the Interior Fitout - Residential award for Balmain House. This project features abstract crafted timberwork. America White Oak is used throughout, in flooring, panelling and joinery.

Dreamtime Australia Design won the Interior Fitout - Commercial award for Grain (bar) Four Seasons, Sydney. Grain (bar) is notable for artist-commissioned finishes and features in timber. These include hanging faux-beams clad in American Cherry veneer, walnut-topped engineered-timber floors and a stunning fireplace featuring Vavona Burl timber.

Come and hear Conrad Johnston of Fox Johnston present on Balmain House and Mel Vatala of Fino Joinery present on Grain (bar) at the WoodSolutions Interior Timber Design Seminar on 14th November.

This free CPD seminar will explore how timber may be used in interior applications. Presenters include winners of the interior categories of the 2013 Australian Timber Design Awards and experts on timber flooring, interior finishes, veneers and healthy buildings.

The seminar is a must for architects, interior designers, building designers and other building and design professionals.

2013 Awards Winners Announced E-mail

2013 Overall Winner - Lend Lease - Forté at Victoria Harbour
2013 Overall Winner - Lend Lease - Forté at Victoria Harbour
The winners of the 2013 Australian Timber Design Awards have been announced! The top prize went to Lend Lease for Melbourne's Forté at Victoria Harbour, the tallest modern timber apartment building in the world.

Forté is a superlative example of what can be achieved using the latest generation of engineered timber products. The judging panel was particularly impressed by the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the building frame. They expect that Forté will serve as a demonstration to the Australian market of how this revolutionary technology permits the rapid constuction of strong, lightweight buildings that may be both tall and wide.

Winners were announced on 19 September at Zinc, Federation Square, Melbourne. Many well-known individuals from government, the timber industry, and the design community were on hand to enjoy what has become the premier event in the Australian timber-design calendar.

See the full list of winners.

Thank you to our judges, our sponsors and, most of all, the many members of the Australian timber design and architecture community who entered projects. The success of the 2013 Australian Timber Design Awards—Australasia's foremost timber design and architectural awards—is due to you.

One more thing: Don't forget about the EXPAN Timber Technology for Commercial Buildings Workshops in early June.

Get ready for a revolution in timber design E-mail

Projects using EXPAN
For over 14 years the Australian Timber Design Awards has been spreading the word about the very latest in timber design. We've written of how architects are using recent innovations in engineered wood products to design high and wide in timber (e.g. Forté Living in Melbourne, or London's Stadhaus). And we've been promising for some years that a new generation of engineered wood products will shortly hit our shores.

Well, those technologies have now arrived. The Structural Timber Innovation Company and several of our leading universities have just completed a five-year research program into new timber systems for multi-storey and long-span buildings. The result is EXPAN, a range of world-class, entirely new timber technologies for large-span commercial, industrial and residential buildings. These include post-stressed beam and frame systems, large-span floors, roof systems and new timber connectors.

To discover for yourself the potential of EXPAN, sign up for the EXPAN Timber Technology for Commercial Buildings Workshop. This all-day workshop will provide comprehensive guides to each new timber technology and a detailed worked example. The dates are:
Brisbane -- 5 June 2013
Sydney -- 6 June 2013
Melbourne -- 7 June 2013

Get your entries in now!
Entries to the Australian Timber Design Awards close 28 June 2013, but get started on your entry now to get ahead of the crowd. Any project finished between February 2010 and June 2013 is eligible for entry.
